It’s a GREAT day for Scouting!

As you know, the Phoenix District covers a large part of Atlanta including Sandy Springs, Buckhead, Midtown, Downtown, Candler Park, Inman Park, Virginia Highlands, and East Atlanta. We have had a superb year and next year will provide us fresh opportunities to reach new goals.

As the Phoenix District Training Chair, I provide leadership to the District Training Committee through Programming. My goal – to lead us, as a district, to qualify for the highest possible level of Scouting’s Journey to Excellence.  Several other districts in the Atlanta Area Council have reached that goal and I plan for us to be among them.

Our district is making significant changes to deliver quality programs to our Scouts and starting now this will also include the leadership training of our adult AND youth leaders.

Our current standings show us moving in the right direction.  However, there is room for significant improvement.  Believe it or not, much of our Program improvement can be made simply by recording activities on Internet Advancement!  Our Scouts advance when they have the best leadership we can provide.

Admittedly, our camping numbers could use a little help.  Our Boy Scouts are on the right road and I encourage them to help our Cub Scouts along.  With our Boy Scouts leading the way, we will grow Cub Scouts who remain dedicated to Scouting and the love of the outdoors.

The training of our leaders, both adult AND youth, is paramount to us reaching our goals.  The 72.7% of untrained leaders represents 670 chartered leaders that have a portion of their training which remains incomplete.  To that end, we will start our rise to the top by ensuring that all of our leaders are fully trained at the beginning of the scouting season.  We’ll accomplish that goal in three ways:

1.    Scoutmasters – if you have adult leaders that are missing a portion of their training, take them to camp!  BSLST and IOLS will be offered at Woodruff (all sessions) and Bert Adams (June sessions).  Youth leaders missing training? Stay tuned for offerings.

2.    Cubmasters – check out camp!  It will give you an opportunity to visit Bert Adams to see what all the Adventure it about.

3.    We will institute our own Phoenix District Scout Leader University.  In a short session, you’ll get the opportunity to complete a large portion of the required training and get you ready to lead your units into the future.  These courses will be arranged such that attendees will be trained for all leadership roles for their units.  This will allow for redundancy in all unit positions in the event of sudden leadership changes.

Here are the dates you should make note of.  There will be a morning and afternoon session – take your pick!

  • Aug 12 – BSLST training at the service center.

  • Aug 26 - BSLST training at the Shriners Lodge in Midtown.

  • Sep 30 – Cub Scout leader training at the service center.

  • Nov 11 - Cub Scout leader training at the Shriners Lodge in Midtown.

Other training options will continue to be available to give everyone as many options as possible to complete training in a manner that is the most stress free for your schedule.

  • Cub Scout Leader Position-Specific Training: Sept 16 in Indian Springs district, Sept 21 in Appalachian Trail district, Oct 31 in Indian Springs district

  • Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation: July 22 in Button Gwinnet district, Sept 9 in Foothills district, Sept 30 in Indian Springs district, Oct 21 at Camp Allatoona

  • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills: Sept 1 – 3 in Flint River district and Nov 17 – 18 in Indian Springs district

In a perfect world, all training would be complete before recharter.

I thank you in advance for your contributions to our success for the 2017 – 18 scouting season.

Lastly, being the single parent of a boy, my sense of competition is strong.  With that said, join me in letting Northern Ridge know – you’ve got the gold and we’re coming for it…

Yours in Scouting,
